The Bosnian Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS),
in partnership with the St. Louis Bosnian community, has initiated an outreach program
to provide mentoring and guidance to younger Bosnian Americans who seek support
for career dvelopment and advancement in professional, educational, and cultural fields.
On Saturday, April 10, 2010, the BHAAAS is sponsoring a free program on the campus of Fontbonne University
Topics & Workshop Format
Medicine / Health Care
Law / Public Policy
Engineering / Computer Science
Literature / Journalism
Research Science / Higher Education
Graphic Arts / Architecture
Business / Finance
The program consists of free one-hour workshops that are designed as interactive exchanges among Bosnian panelists and audience members. Discussion will focus on practical advice from expert panelists, preparation needed to be successful in these fields, and opportunities for entry level openings and internships.
Scholarship & Financial Aid Information
Information on scholarships & financial aid for undergraduate and graduate studies will be provided for program participants. The Scholarship Foundation of St. Louis (http://www.sfstl.org/), which provides no-interest, no-fee loans to qualified students, will have staff members present to explain their application process and criteria. Additional resources will be available for students and parents seeking information on financing higher education. Study abroad options, including in Sarajevo and Tuzla, will be included as part of the program.
Creating Bridges of Community Connection
Fifteen years after war and genocide, the Bosnian diaspora in the United States and Canada has emerged as one of the most resourceful and dynamic segments of North American society.
The Bosnian Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts& Sciences (BHAAAS) has initiated this program of outreach to:
1) build bridges of support with younger Bosnian Americans;
2) provide connection among Bosnian professionals;
3) develop cooperative links among diaspora communities and projects of mutual benefit with those in Bosnia-Herzegovina.
Featured Guests
BHAAAS President and acclaimed author Aleksandar Hemon will provide a public reading from his work at 5 pm. Hemon's Love and Obstacles was a New York Times Notable Book last year and his 2008 work The Lazarus Project was a finalist for a National Book Award. A book signing hosted by Left Bank Books follows the reading.
The Consul General from Bosnia-Herzegovina, Eldin Kajevic, will welcome program participants and workshop presenters, including Emir Kamenica, professor of economics at the University of Chicago, Elmina Kulasic, executive director of the Bosniak American Advisory Council for Bosnia and Herzegovina, and many other distinguished workshop panelists and moderators.
