· Born in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, 1964; · Attended elementary and high school in Sarajevo; · Graduated from the University of Sarajevo, in 1990, with a degree in General Literature; · Worked and wrote for Radio-Sarajevo Youth Program; the magazines Valter and Naši Dani; freelanced for other Sarajevo media; · Published stories and poems all around the former Yugoslavia; · The story “The Life and Work of Alphonse” (which with additional notes appears in The Question of Bruno) appeared in the anthology “The Best Yugoslav Short Stories 1990,” edited by David Albahari and Mihajlo Pantic. · The radio play based on “The Life and Work of Alphonse Kauders” won Premios Ondas at the radio festival in Barcelona, Spain 1990; · Since 1992, lives in Chicago, USA; · Worked as a waiter (illegally); canvasser (Greenpeace, 1992-1995); bookseller (The Art Institute of Chicago, 1995); teacher of English as the Second Language (Zarem Golde ORT Institute,1995-1997); bike messenger (Dynamex, 1997); supervisor at a literacy center (Loyola Community Literacy Center, 1998-2000)—all in Chicago; · Attained MA in English Literature from Northwestern University, 1995; · PhD student in English Literature at Loyola University Chicago, 1997—1999; · Taught a course in Modernist Poetry at Loyola University, summer 1999; · Taught a course in Creative Writing and a course in 20th Century Fiction at Northwestern University, Winter Quarter 2002; · Teaches regularly in the writing program at the School of Continuing Studies—Northwestern University; · Visiting Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign, Fall 2004; · Since 1995, writes fiction in English; · Published fiction in The New Yorker; Esquire; Granta; McSweeney’s, TriQuarterly; Chicago Review; Ploughshares; The Baffler; Tin House, The Paris Review, etc; · Stories included in Best American Short Stories 1999, 2000; 2006; · Published the collection of short stories The Question of Bruno (Nan A. Tales/Doubleday, 2000) to international acclaim (visit www.questionofbruno.com); · His second book Nowhere Man (Nan A. Talese/Doubleday, September 2002) received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for National Book Critics Circle Award and Los Angeles Times Book Award (visit www.aleksandarhemon.com); · His novel The Lazarus Project (Riverhead) published in 2008; · The Lazarus Project was a finalist for the 2008 National Book Award and NBCC Award for fiction; · Love and Obstacles (Riverhead), a colletion of short stories, published in 2009; · The Question of Bruno, Nowhere Man, The Lazarus Project and Love and Obstacles have been or will be published in the United States, Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Holland, Portugal, Spain (in Castilian and Catalan), Greece, Turkey, Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia and Montenegro, Taiwan, Brazil, Japan, Israel; · Received an Illinois Literary Award 1997, 1998; · Received the Chicago Public Library Foundation 21st Century Award, 2000; · Received 2002 Award for Adult Fiction for Nowhere Man from The Society of Midland Authors, and 2009 Award for The Lazarus Project; · Received a John S. Guggenheim Fellowship 2003; · Received a John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation Fellowship 2004; · Received The Chicago Tribune’s Heartland Prize in 2008; · Has written book reviews and various articles for the Chicago Tribune, the Village Voice, the Wall Street Journal, Playboy, the New Yorker, the New York Times, MSN Slate on-line magazine etc; · Writes the regular bi-weekly column Hemonwood, in Bosnian, for the Sarajevo magazine BH Dani; · Lives in Chicago with his wife and daughters.
