Dr. Syed Arshad Husain


Dr. Arshad Husain is currently Professor of Child Psychiatry and Child Health, and Chief of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Missouri's School of Medicine in Columbia, Missouri . Born in India , Dr. Husain received his medical education at Dow Medical College in Karachi , Pakistan . He continued his specialty training in Psychiatry in England at Maudsley Institute and in Canada at McGill University and Child Psychiatry Training at University of Missouri-Columbia. He is a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists of England, the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and of the American Psychiatric Association. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, both in General and Child Psychiatry. He joined the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Missouri School of Medicine in 1970.


In addition to his teaching responsibilities as the Director of Training in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Missouri School of Medicine, Dr. Husain has published over 65 papers in noted medical journals (including the American Journal of Psychiatry and the Canadian Journal of Psychiatry), scientific proceedings and book reviews on adolescent psychiatry and on psychiatric education and teaching. He is the author of five professional books on various aspects of child psychopathology, and is a member of twelve professional societies in the United States and internationally, where he has been elected to key administrative positions.


Dr. Husain is known for his research on sexually and physically abused children, as well as, his work with war traumatized children in Bosnia and Herzegovina . Since 1994, Husain and his Trauma Team at the University of Missouri have made 20 trips to war torn Bosnia and had trained more than 2000 teachers and over 200 mental health professionals to help children deal with the trauma and tragedy associated with war. For almost 10 years, Dr. Husain has led a World Federation of Mental Health Committee in its efforts to prevent child pornography and the commercial sexual exploitation of children throughout the world. The Committee, in collaboration with other international human rights organizations, has lobbied successfully in several countries for legislative changes regarding child prostitution, child pornography, and human trafficking. For his above work, Dr. Husain is awarded by APA the Bruno Lima Award for outstanding contributions to Disaster Psychiatry. He is also awarded by the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the most coveted Irving Philips Memorial Award for a life time of contributions to the prevention of mental illness in children and adolescents. Dr. Husain received the American Psychiatric Association's 1997 George Tarjan Award given to an International Medical Graduate for his/her outstanding contributions to American Psychiatry. The Assembly of the American Psychiatric Association awarded Dr. Husain the first A Profile of Courage @ award in 1997 for his work in Bosnia .

This award is given to a member of APA for his/her meritorious courage in support of a patient group ro ethical principles of the American Psychiatric Association. In August 1999, the University of Tuzla awarded an honorary doctorate to Dr. Husain for his contribution especially to the education of young staff in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war. The American Medical Association honored Dr. Husain with The Pride in the Profession Award of 2001. This award honors a physician whose service brings a sense of pride of the medical profession through volunteerism and advancement of public health. In July 2001, Dr. Husain was honored with a Proclamation from the Governor of Missouri for his outstanding humanitarian work throughout his career.

Criteria for Membership/ Membership Fees

Sve kategorije clanstva moraju ispunjavati sljedece uslove:

  1. Bosanskohercegovacko porijeklo.
  2. Drzavljanstvo ili stalni boravak u USA ili Kanadi;
  3. Visoka strucna sprema/graduate degree, sa izuzetkom kandidata iz nenaucnih oblasti;
  4. Odanost nacelima BHAAAS;
  5. Odanost ideji visenacionalne, demokratske Bosne i Hercegovine;
  6. Postovanje najvisih etickih i moralnih standarda, ukljucujuci i nacela vezana za slobodnu razmjenu ideja i misljenja;

Kriteriji za prijem:


1. Redovni clan (Active member):

  • Doktorat ili ekvivalent, sa izuzetkom kadidata iz oblasti kulture, umjetnosti, novinarstva i drugih nenaucnih oblasti;
  • Istaknuto profesionalno prisustvo (objavljene knjige, clanci, naucni i strucni radovi, odrzani koncerti, izlozbe, patenti, kriticka priznanja etc) u vlastitoj oblasti;
  • Zapazena aktivnost u okviru bosanskohercegovacke zajednice;

2. Pridruzeni clan (Associate Member):

  • Magisterij ili ekvivalent, sa izuzetkom kandidata iz oblasti kulture, umjetnosti, novinarstva i drugih nenaucnih oblasti;
  • Istaknuta aktivnost, kao i duzina prisustva, u svojoj profesionalnoj oblasti;
  • Znacajna aktivnost u okviru bosanskohercegovacke zajednice;

3. Dopisni clan (Corresponding Member):

  • Phd/ekvivalent ili magisterij/ekvivalent, sa izuzetkom kadidata iz oblasti  kulture, umjetnosti, novinarstva i drugih nenaucnih oblasti;
  • Kandidati ne ispunjavaju uslov stalnog boravka u USA/Kanadi, ali ispunjavaju uslov bosanskohercegovackog porijekla;
  • Zapazen doprinos bosanskohercegovackoj zajednici, nauci i kulturi;

4. Medjunarodni clan (International Member):

  • Kandidat ispunjava uslove i kriterije za Redovno ili Pridruzeno, osim sto ne zivi u Sjevernoj Americi, niti je bosanskohercegovackog porijekla;
  • Kandidat se istice aktivnostima vezanim za dobrobit bosanskohercegovacke zajednice, kako u zemlji, tako i u inostranstvu;

5. Pocasni clan (Honorary Member):

  • Kandidati ne ispunjavaju uslove i kriterije za ostale kategorije clanstva, ali su se istakli dosadasnjim radom vezanim za dobrobit bosanskohercegovacke zajednice u Sjevernoj Americi;

6. Kandidat (Candidate Member):

  • Kandidati su u procesu viseg stepena obrazovanja u USA ili Kanadi, a kompletiranjem procesa ce ispuniti uslove I krtierije za redovno ili pridruzno clanstvo; (vremenski limit za kategoriju kandidata je minimum jedna (1) a maksimum sedam (7) godina);
  • Kandidat ima fakultetsku diplomu;
