Mirzada Pasic Kurbasic, M.D., M.Sc.
PERSONAL STATEMENTI am a general pediatrician, but I have always considered myself a true academician. I always loved teaching and participating in research, but patient care remains extremely important to me. My first position at the Children’s University Hospital Tuzla, Bosnia-Herzegovina provided me with an opportunity to be active in all those areas of pediatrics. Unfortunately, due to the war in my native country I was forced to relocate with my family. After three years of training (completing General Pediatric Academic Fellowship at University of Louisville: same program that I am currently co-directing, and one year of pediatric residency training) and passing all required Board exams, I was privileged to obtain a faculty position within Division of General Pediatrics that enables me to do again what I love the most: treat patients, teach and participate in clinical research. I am currently one of the four full time faculty at University Child Health Specialists, an office site with over 15,000 patient visits per year. A unique aspect of my work is providing comprehensive care to immigrant and refugee population. My special interest in immigrant health resulted in taking a lead role in providing culturally-competent, superior-quality healthcare to Louisville’s increasingly diverse international population one of the fastest growing immigrant populations in the nation, thus significantly advancing the overall welfare of our immigrant community. Due to this efforts resulting in the facilitation of communication and access to primary care health care the Division of General Pediatrics has greatly improved the provision of primary care treatment to our immigrant community and was awarded 2008 Mayor’s International Award., and was featured at UofL website home page under the “Insight to Champion Community” At the same time I have an opportunity to teach at all levels, including public health nurses, nurse practitioner students, medical students, pediatric residents and fellows, and to teach them a distinctive side of multicultural and multiethnic pediatric practice. I also appreciate having a chance to conduct research, from participation in clinical trials, to independent research related to immigrant health. In the most recent years, I have instituted collaboration with Bosnian pediatricians, serving as a clinical consultant, invited Lecturer of Pediatrics, and providing help with research to my colleagues in Tuzla, Bosnia. I have given lectures to medical students clinical staff, pediatric residents, and physicians on wide variety of topics, including: early detection of childhood malignancies, medical education in the USA, child abuse, health supervision of toddlers, etc. I am a member of the Editorial Board and a reviewer for Pedijatrija danas (Pediatrics Today), a newly established journal for Bosnian professionals who care for child health. One of the initiatives resulting from this collaboration is increasing awareness of child abuse among Bosnian pediatricians, resulting in the lectures and series of articles published (or in press) in Pediatrics Today on the topics. Another very exciting initiative to implement autism screening in Bosnia has been funded and is scheduled to start in 2009. I will supervise this project, conducted by the local pediatricians, in the capacity of an implementation mentor. To a general pediatrician and clinician it is difficult to obtain national recognition, but my clinical work with refugee and immigrant populations, and my international involvement in pediatrics resulted in several positions that I held in one of the largest Sections within American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on International Child Health. I was an Executive Committee member of the Section in the function of the Chair of the Nominations Committee. I am also a vital member of the I-CATCH (International Access to Child Health) Committee, overseeing marketing and development of the program., and serving as a Reviewer and Facilitator. I-CATCH Program is relatively novel project of American Academy of Pediatrics, often referred to as “one of the top five priorities of the Academy” implemented in 2006 and designed to support innovative community-based initiatives that increase children's access to health care or services not otherwise available in the developing countries, with the expectations to decrease health disparities. The tremendous potential of the I-CATCH program was validated. In the three year period I-CATCH has sponsored 17 projects in 14 countries, Although assessment of the long-term impact of the I-CATCH program is needed, the initial three years show great promise. For the four consecutive years I have served as a National Reviewer for American Academy of Pediatrics International Elective Award for Pediatric Residents Selection Committee. The purpose of the award is to encourage young physicians’ interest in global health. The number of applications has been impressive and steadily increasing trough the all four years: 115 in 2005, 129 in 2006, 150 in 2007, and 72 applications in the first half of 2008. In 2008 I have become the Chair of the Academic Pediatric Society International Health Special Interest Group. I am currently in charge of putting the International SIGS program for Pediatric Academic Society (PAS) 2009 Meeting in Baltimore. This program, featuring prominent leaders in Global Child Health, usually attracts broad audience, and I am honored to be part of this planning process. All this work has already given me huge personal satisfaction, and I look forward to many productive years at the University of Louisville.
