KCUS collaborates with our expert in neurosurgery
With colleagues from the U.S., Arnautovic operated on Bosnian patients

Prof. Dr. Kenan Arnautovic has been working in Memphis for 9 years-Scoliosis surgery performed on young patients - Continuing collaboration

Kenan Arnautovic, professor of neurosurgery originally from Sarajevo, who has been working in Memphis TN for nine years, returned to Sarajevo again to perform complicated surgery on Bosnian-Herzegovinian patients.  Arnautovic, who completed his first resident neurosurgical training in Sarajevo, and second in Tennessee, has started a project to help to advance neurosurgery and spinal neurosurgery in Bosnia and Herzegovina. This is his sixth visit to Sarajevo within this project.

Team Work

In his statement to Dnevni Avaz, Dr. Arnautovic says “Mostly, I have come with colleagues from Memphis. During each visit we organized symposia and participated in surgeries.  Last year we performed pediatric neurosurgeries.”

This time Dr. Arnautovic came to Sarajevo with Dr. Julius Hernandez, his colleague from the Clinic in Memphis, and a scoliosis expert.

“In three days we performed three surgeries.  The surgical intervention I performed consisted of lumbar decompression and postero-lateral fusion, while my colleague performed composite surgeries on two young scoliosis patients.  We worked in teams with Sarajevan colleagues, Prof. Dr. Ismet Gavrankapetanovic and Prof. Dr. Mirza Biscevic. Dr. Fernandez shared with me his impression of Dr. Biscevic as exceptionally talented and knowledgeable specialist in scoliosis.”

Donated Equipment

Doctors Arnatovic and Fernandes donated equipment, screws and implants worth more than $100,000. They also examined and provided consultations with around 30 patients.

“The colleagues who have come with me to Sarajevo were fascinated by Sarajevo and the warm reception, and I am sure that the collaboration between KCUS and the Semmes-Murphey Clinic for Neurosurgery from Memphis will continue.”

Training in Memphis

Dr. Abdulah Hasanagic recently returned to Sarajevo from the neurosurgery sub-specialization training in Memphis.  In Memphis, he worked with Dr. Rick Book and Dr. Arnautovic. His training was funded by the Clinic in Memphis.

Ties with the homeland

“The Bosnian Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences, of which I am a member, has a large number of medical doctors and other professionals among its members. They all work on advancing the collaboration between the Bosnians who live in the U.S. and their homeland. There are other doctors who plan to come to Bosnia.”
