What to expect:

Following mandatory approval of Famulatar by Department of Neurosurgery and HR of University Hospital Marburg, the student will spend 4 weeks (20 working days) the Clinic for Neurosurgery, University Clinic Marburg, under the mentorship of PD Dr. med. Mirza Pojskic, as a student-famulant, analogous to student practice which in German-speaking areas is called Famulatur. The stay is divided into two parts, the student will spend two weeks in the normal ward and two weeks in the neurosurgical intensive care unit.

The working day starts at 7 am. The student is required to attend the morning visit (in the normal ward and in the intensive care unit) which lasts from 7:00-7:30. The morning meeting is at 7:30 am, after which the student will be assigned to the normal ward, the outpatient clinic, the intensive care unit or the operating room, according to the plan for the specific working day. The student is required to spend a maximum of eight hours during the working day at the clinic (until 3:00 pm) with a 30-minute break; if desired, the student can stay longer, and spend time at the clinic during weekend shifts.

During the stay in the normal ward, the student will be integrated into the clinical routine with the tasks of a medical student in Marburg under the supervision of specialists and residents of the clinic (participation in the morning visit, mastering basic skills such as setting up a venous line, venipuncture for laboratory analysis, wound dressing, handling lumbar drains, familiarization with basic neuroradiological methods with the basics of interpreting computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging for neurosurgical cranial and spinal diseases).

During the stay in the normal ward, the student will also spend a certain amount of time in the neurosurgical outpatient clinic, where, according to the level of knowledge of the German language, they will participate in taking anamnesis and clinical examination of outpatient patients. Daily visits to the operating room are planned, where the student will have the opportunity to learn about the principles of working in the operating room, the principles of sepsis and antisepsis, assist in neurosurgical procedures under supervision and become familiar with basic surgical skills such as correct patient positioning, surgical approaches, working with an operating microscope, principles of neuronavigation, working with intraoperative CT and a robotic arm, and surgical sutures. During the stay in the intensive care, the student will be integrated into the clinical routine under supervision (morning rounds, examination of the patient in intensive care, basics of working on a respirator, basics of interpreting arterial blood gas analysis, basics of monitoring intracranial pressure via external drainage, taking blood and cerebrospinal fluid samples under the supervision of specialists and residents).

The student will participate in numerous conferences of the neurosurgery clinic: neuroendocrinology conference on Tuesdays, neurooncology conference on Wednesdays, and skull base conference and neurovascular conference on Thursdays, where they will learn about the foundations of interdisciplinary work with other disciplines in the treatment of complex neurosurgical diseases. According to the student's wishes and motivation, participation in the afternoon neurosurgical conference at 3:00 p.m. is also desirable.

The student is expected to arrive at the clinic on time, actively participate and be interested in the daily analysis of neurosurgical cases, take their own initiative during the time spent in the operating room, and fully integrate into the clinical routine with fellow students, residents and specialists. For successfully completed internship, the student will receive a certificate, and an exceptional student will receive a letter of recommendation. Upon completion of the internship, the student is required to submit a written report on the stay in Marburg within 6 weeks and to conduct an evaluation of their stay, analogous to the evaluation that the superviser would do for the student. It would be desirable that during the stay in Marburg the student chooses one or more cases in which he will be involved as an assistant in the operation and process that case as a case report which will be sent as an abstract to the BHAAAS Days and other conferences in the region that have a student symposia. It is also desirable to continue scientific cooperation between the supervisot and the student in the sense of writing a scientific paper related to the case report or other modalities.

Selected students are expected to demonstrate enthusiasm for academic progress and to adhere to institutional protocols and rules. Students are required to be supervised during patient encounters and while providing patient care. Students should maintain professionalism in their interactions with patients, patients' families, support staff, and physicians in all situations. Professional conduct must include empathy, compassion, respect and commitment to patient confidentiality.
