The Bosnian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), in partnership with Mediacenter Sarajevo and with the support of the BiH Open Society Fund, is organizing a three-day online conference on scientific journalism, to educate and spread awareness about the importance of this type of journalism. The conference will bring together 15 science journalists and scientists, many of whom are members of the Balkan Network of Science Journalists, who will share their knowledge and experience through webinars, panel discussions, and workshops.

The disinterest of the public, and therefore the media, in scientific topics is one of the biggest challenges to the development of scientific journalism in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Journalists who deal with scientific topics, however, think that this problem is largely a delusion and that there is public interest. It is necessary to awaken that interest, and for that, some methods can be used by the media.

In Bosnia and Herzegovina, there is no TV or radio program entirely dedicated to science and technology. Why such shows are important, how to start such a show, and how to make it interesting and sustainable will be discussed on this panel.

Statistical data that we encounter every day are very often misinterpreted. Sometimes the media and journalists themselves fall into these traps, for example when transmitting statistical data related to COVID-19. This lecture will discuss the most common mistakes when interpreting COVID-19 data and why it is important to understand and correctly report statistical data.

The World Health Organization has declared the fight against disinformation one of the 10 biggest challenges in the coming decades. For journalists and the media, this is a special challenge. At this workshop, some of the methods of selecting and checking sources of scientific information will be presented, a concrete approach will be explained through an example of creating the content of the Vakcine.ba portal. Finally, through group exercises, participants will have the opportunity to practically apply this knowledge.

17:00 - 20:00 - Workshop: Creating an attractive story about a domestic scientific achievement
This workshop will provide an opportunity for a more detailed understanding of how and where to find good topics based on stories of domestic scientific achievements, and how to present them to editors. In the first part, participants will have the opportunity to discuss their ideas with experienced editors and scientists, and they will then be able to apply this in the second part of the workshop, where through group exercises, participants will work on finding and proposing scientific topics for processing - all with the support of experienced scientific journalists and scientists.
