Based on the UN Resolution from 2007, April 2nd is celebrated worldwide as World Autism Day for the fifth year in a row. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that significantly affects the ability for generally accepted ways of communication and social interaction and is also characterized by stereotypical (repetitive) behavior. The latest research shows that as many as 1% of people in the world have an autism spectrum disorder. Although scientists have not yet precisely determined the causes of this disorder, for twenty years intensive work has been done to find the most effective therapy and educational model, with very good results. In doing so, the focus is on early intervention and adaptation of school systems to the educational needs of children with autism, for whom the classical teaching system does not suit. In our country, the largest number of children with autism spend their lives isolated from society and completely dependent on their families. Many of them never even learn the basic ways of communication. Given the lack of early intervention mechanisms and quality support for the education system, a few non-governmental organizations that help children with developmental difficulties are the only expression of social concern for these children. Within its program and almost exclusively with the help of international organizations, EDUS provides early intervention and education according to the highest world standards for 80 children, most of whom are diagnosed with autism. At the same time, he also advocates for finding a systemic solution to help this and other children with developmental disorders throughout the country, which would stop violating their basic human rights to development, education, and participation in social life, and these children would become equal with children of typical development. EDUS participates in the celebration of World Autism Day with a short film about our daily activities with children diagnosed on the autism spectrum, their parents, and educators, which you can find via the link.http://youtu.be/tQ-pTgc4gC4. By promoting such a film to the public, we want to show that there is a struggle and possibility for a better tomorrow in Bosnia and Herzegovina and that children with autism have a voice.
