Biology students in Bosnia and Herzegovina have the opportunity to gain practical laboratory experience working with experienced and trained experts within the summer internship organized by BHAAAS in cooperation with the Department of Pathology of the University Clinical Center Tuzla. Under the guidance of mentor prof. Dr. Ermine Iljazović, a specialist in pathological anatomy, two students from the universities in Sarajevo and Tuzla, Neila Sabitović and Emina Zenkić, had a summer internship.
"I am extremely glad that I guided and mentored two students from the University of Sarajevo and Tuzla, who showed great enthusiasm and dedication in their work. I believe that this experience will significantly contribute to their further education and career. The students showed exceptional motivation for acquiring new knowledge and we really enjoyed interacting with them. We are convinced that the knowledge they gained during their stay in our laboratory will help them in further education and possible future laboratory occupation. Both students had the opportunity to observe the daily routine work of the ZZP departments, and both showed a willingness and interest in this type of work as biologists, as well as a willingness to get involved in research projects in this field." – points out prof.dr. Ermina Iljazović welcoming the initiative of BHAAAS in organizing such practices for biology students.
During the four weeks of summer internship, the students gained practical laboratory experience under the mentorship of qualified experts and were introduced to different departments of molecular pathology, including classical molecular pathology, cytogenetics and flow cytometry.
"During the summer school, I gained valuable experience through the acquisition of new techniques and skills. I had the opportunity to meet numerous experts from various fields of biology, which significantly broadened my horizons and contributed to my professional development. I perfected my knowledge in specific areas of biology, which enriched my theoretical and practical knowledge in this discipline. I especially liked the attitude of the mentors towards us as interns, as well as their dedication to work and improvement. They were all ready to share their knowledge and provide us with the best possible experience during the month that this was a unique opportunity for biology students to get to know work in the field of healthcare. I hope that this project will continue in the future, so that other students will have the opportunity for professional training, and that we as a community can act better and more efficiently." - points out Neila Sabitović, a biology student at the University of Tuzla.
This internship provides students with invaluable laboratory experience, allowing them to gain useful knowledge and develop academically and professionally.
"As biology students, we have insufficient opportunities for professional training in the field of healthcare, so this project is something that is necessary for biology students in Bosnia and Herzegovina. During a one-month internship at the Department of Pathology, I gained valuable practical experience in daily work in the laboratory. I am actively participated in the process of processing tissue samples, from preparation to staining of histological preparations, which included the use of various staining techniques such as hematoxylin-eosin and special staining for certain types of tissue, performing PCR, HLA typing, creating karyograms, working with a flow cytometer and much more. Under the mentorship of experienced biologists, chemists and doctors, I participated in the interpretation of findings and their clinical significance, which enabled me to gain a deeper understanding of the role of molecular tests" - emphasizes Emina Zenkić, a biology student at the University of Sarajevo, adding that this internship was crucial for expanding her knowledge. on molecular diagnostics and contributed significantly to professional development.
The summer internship program organized by BHAAAS in cooperation with the Department of Pathology of the University College Tuzla not only enriches the academic path of students, but also prepares them for challenges in the world of biological sciences, providing them with a strong foundation for further career development.
