The Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival (BHFF) in New York has announced the guests of its 22nd edition, including Aleksandar Hemon, an award-winning Bosnian-American writer, professor of creative writing at Princeton University, and a member of BHAAAS.
This year’s festival brings together prominent names from the world of film and art, including actor Rade Šerbedžija, director Lidija Zelović, artist Aida Šehović, visual artist Bojan Stojčić, and other authors and creatives whose work contributes to contemporary cultural trends.
Aleksandar Hemon will take part in the short film program, where he will engage with the audience after the screenings and participate in a Q&A session alongside other authors. This format enables direct dialogue between artists and the audience, further enriching the festival experience.
Hemon is the author of numerous award-winning works, including The Lazarus Project, a finalist for the National Book Award, as well as The Book of My Lives and his latest novel The World and All That It Holds. His work is marked by strong themes of identity, migration, and the experience of living between cultures, placing him among the most significant contemporary authors from the region.
This acclaimed writer of Bosnian heritage has received prestigious recognitions, including a Guggenheim Fellowship and the MacArthur Foundation award, widely known as the “genius grant.”
Aleksandar Hemon’s participation in the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival in New York once again confirms the strong presence and influence of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian diaspora on the global cultural scene. For BHAAAS, this is also an opportunity to highlight the contributions of its members in an international context, as well as the importance of connecting through art, science, and the exchange of ideas.
The Bosnian-Herzegovinian Film Festival in New York (BHFF) will take place from April 22 to 25 at the SVA Theatre in Chelsea. This film festival directly contributes to cultural and artistic exchange between Bosnia and Herzegovina, the Western Balkans, and the United States, and is one of the longest-running continuously held film festivals in New York.
The festival is a project of The Academy of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ABH), a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 2004 with the aim of strengthening the cultural and academic work of Bosnians and Herzegovinians in the New York area, while promoting the intellectual and cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is an event that provides an opportunity for filmmakers from Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region to present their work.
