BHAAAS expresses serious concern regarding a publicly circulated video of an incident in Makarska, in which psychiatrist and Professor of Psychiatry Dragan Babić (Associate Professor, MD, PhD, University of Mostar) allegedly verbally abused a woman from Sarajevo on national and religious grounds.
As Prof. Babić participated in the Days of BHAAAS, the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS) is issuing this statement to clearly distance itself from and disassociate the Academy from the views and conduct attributed to him.
While fully respecting the presumption of innocence and the right to due process, we believe the seriousness of these allegations warrants prompt investigation by the competent institutions.
We call on the relevant Federal and Cantonal Medical Chamber and University of Mostar to investigate the matter and, in accordance with the law and their respective mandates, consider temporarily suspending his medical license and teaching duties pending the outcome of the proceedings.
Hate speech and discrimination are incompatible with the fundamental values of medicine, medical education, and Hippocrates oath. Physicians and professors carry a particular professional and ethical responsibility, as their conduct directly affects public trust in these professions.
BHAAAS calls on the competent authorities to address this matter seriously, impartially, and without delay.
