As part of the 16th Annual Conference of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), to be held in Sarajevo from June 19–22, 2025, a special spotlight will be on the panel “Artificial Intelligence and Robotics in Medicine: Innovation, Ethics, and Safety.”
The event will take place on June 20 at 9:00 a.m. at the ASA Institute, focusing on the key aspects of integrating artificial intelligence and robotics in medicine and highlighting the importance of ethical and safety standards in the application of new technologies.
The discussion will cover concrete real-world applications, including neurosurgical procedures with robotic assistance, pioneering gynecological robotics interventions, and the use of AI in cardiology diagnostics and everyday hospital operations.
The panel will be moderated by Dr. Vedka Begović, clinical professor and co-chair of the BHAAAS Medical Section, who emphasizes the importance of ethical standards in AI development and notes:
“Since ChatGPT became publicly available in November 2022, we have witnessed rapid development of similar models. The question is no longer whether AI models will be used in medicine and healthcare — but rather what results their application will bring. Interest in using AI in healthcare is growing rapidly, along with partnerships between tech companies and medical institutions. AI will not replace doctors, but we must be ready to understand and responsibly navigate these technological advancements,” says Dr. Begović, adding that healthcare professionals must gain a clear understanding of the fundamentals of these models, their applications, and their potential risks or limitations.
As Dr. Begović further highlights, the goal of this educational event is to foster interdisciplinary dialogue between experts who design and develop AI algorithms and models, and physicians who apply them in clinical practice.
The panel will feature prominent international and local experts, including:
Dr. Aida Branković (Australia) – Award-winning engineer in the field of health informatics and AI research, recognized for her work on advanced medical tools and decision-support systems. Her projects focus on ethical innovation in AI, and one of her most significant contributions is a portable stroke scanner that marks a breakthrough in rapid and efficient diagnostics.
Dr. Mirza Pojskić (Germany) – Neurosurgeon specializing in AI-assisted spinal surgery
Dr. Azra Sadiković (USA) – Gynecological surgeon and pioneer in the use of Da Vinci robotic systems
Dr. Austin Robinson (USA) – Cardiologist and specialist in cardiovascular imaging
Dr. Emir Gušo (BiH) – Radiology specialist, ASA Hospital
Enes Hatibović – IT Manager at ASA Hospital (BiH)
For the past sixteen years, BHAAAS Days have gathered both established and emerging professionals from Bosnia and Herzegovina, the diaspora, and around the world, offering a rich and diverse program.
