BHAAAS States: Bosnia and Herzegovina Deserves Stability, Not Labels

The Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), a respected and non-partisan organization bringing together scientists, physicians, engineers, and artists of Bosnian and Herzegovinian origin in the United States, has issued a statement in response to recent political remarks and institutional challenges concerning Bosnia and Herzegovina and its position in the international context.

The statement was prompted by recent public comments and assessments made during discussions on the Western Balkans, in which Bosnia and Herzegovina was described as a “failed state.” BHAAAS emphasizes that such characterizations are not grounded in historical facts and do not reflect the country’s real social, cultural, or institutional potential.

“Bosnia and Herzegovina is not a failed state. It is a country of rich history, a unique multiethnic structure, and strong human capital, proven over decades both within the country and throughout its diaspora,” representatives of BHAAAS state.

In this context, BHAAAS addressed a letter to the highest institutions of the United States, including U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, as well as the chairs and members of the relevant U.S. Congressional committees responsible for foreign policy. The letter expresses concern over rhetoric and political practices that could undermine the Dayton Peace Agreement, democratic processes, and the overall stability of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Academy particularly warns against narratives that deepen divisions, relativize war crimes, or encourage secessionist tendencies, all of which have a direct negative impact on peace, social cohesion, and the country’s international standing. At the same time, BHAAAS requested a meeting between its representatives and U.S. officials, with the aim of engaging in direct dialogue and exchanging facts regarding the current situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The Academy also recalls that for nearly two decades it has been actively engaged in Bosnia and Herzegovina through the organization of international scientific conferences, knowledge transfer projects, mentorship, and the linking of domestic institutions with global centers of excellence. As emphasized, its work remains strictly professional, apolitical, and focused on the long-term development of society.

“Our responsibility is to respond when Bosnia and Herzegovina is portrayed in a way that does not correspond to the facts and that may have long-term consequences for its international position. Knowledge, dialogue, and international cooperation are key tools for preserving stability and the democratic future of the country,” BHAAAS representatives conclude.

BHAAAS calls on all domestic and international stakeholders to act responsibly, based on facts, with respect for historical context and democratic values, and stresses the importance of continued strong international support for Bosnia and Herzegovina.
