Married couple James and Judith Herbert from Lansing (USA) donated five million dollars to establish a foundation for advanced genomics and precision medicine at the Sparrow Herbert-Herman Cancer Center.
Member of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian-American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), eminent physician Gordan Srkalović, head of the Center, was instrumental in this historic donation to the Sparrow Health System from Michigan. "Clinical trials based on genomics are already underway at the Cancer Center," said Dr. Gordan Srkalović. However, the newly established foundation could be the first step in advancing that work, helping the Cancer Center become a hub for genomic testing. "I think this donation will make a difference not only for the community of Lansing but also for the wider community of Mid Michigan and Michigan," said Srkalovic.
By the way, the Herbert couple has been helping the healthcare system and cancer care with their donations for 27 years. Both cancer survivors have been promoting and encouraging the development of genomics and precision medicine for years, which involves using a patient's genomic information to tailor treatment rather than a standardized approach. "Cancer genomics is the future," said James Herman, a longtime oncologist at Sparrow Cancer Center.
