Dr. Gajić from the Mayo Clinic in the USA: The key thing in the fight against COVID-19

Ognjen Gajić, an intensive care physician, pulmonologist, and university professor who works as a clinical informatics specialist and intensive care specialist of the Department of Pulmonary Medicine at the prestigious Mayo Clinic in Minnesota, spoke in "New Day" about his experiences in treating severe forms of COVID-19 disease.

Gajić told N1 that the age group of patients in the USA is different, just like everywhere else in the world. "The majority of patients are elderly or middle-aged. Although we also had younger patients, including pregnant women," he said. What are the fatal diseases in combination with the Coronavirus? "Experience has shown that patients with diabetes, older patients, obese patients, and patients with chronic lung and heart diseases have more fatal results," he said. Gajić said that in patients who require hospital treatment, in addition to research protocols where other therapies are tried, remdesivir and antiviral drugs are most often used, and in patients who require oxygen, corticosteroids are also given. "It has been proven that they reduce mortality. And doctors in Bosnia and Herzegovina use them," he said. Since a large number of patients are treated at home, many of them take some medication on their initiative. "We do not recommend drugs outside of research studies. At home, the main thing is paracetamol for temperature control, cough syrup," he said, adding that contact with a doctor is the most important thing in the treatment of the Coronavirus. "A well-organized intensive care unit with well-trained staff is key," he said. In his opinion, respirators are a necessary evil in treatment. "A third to a half of patients can recover with large amounts of oxygen with humidified warm air or on noninvasive ventilation. For some of them, half or a little more, their condition worsens and requires intubation. Patients are in the prone position, however I can. The team needs to be trained, especially the nurses, which is sometimes much more important than the doctors," advised guest N1. Despite everything that has been happening in the world for the past half year, there are still those who do not believe in COVID-19. "Corona is the truth. Corona is a serious disease; it's not an ordinary flu. It can lead to bilateral pneumonia, which can be life-threatening. The best way to protect yourself is the epidemiological measures we all know: masks in closed spaces, keeping your distance, and washing your hands," he told N1. Gajić said that there is not a single healthcare system in the world that can withstand the arrival of hundreds of people who come to the emergency room in a day because it is impossible to dedicate yourself to the patient. "A well-trained team of doctors, nurses, technicians, and therapists who monitor the patient and react promptly is crucial," he said. Ultimately, he praised Professor Kovačević from UKC RS, who he said has excellent results with patients.
