TEDx lecture by Prof. Dr. Ismar Volić's "The Hidden Math That Shapes Democracy" was chosen as a TED Editor's Pick, a prestigious award that, according to available estimates, only receives about 0.2 percent of TEDx lectures.
Prof. Dr. Ismar Volić is a professor of mathematics and director of the Institute for Mathematics and Democracy at Wellesley College in the United States of America, a member of BHAAAS and one of the former presidents of the Academy.
In a lecture held at TEDxBrownUniversity, he talks about the mathematical rules embedded in democratic systems and the ways in which they determine whose vote counts, how political power is distributed, and how much elected representatives really represent citizens.
"Understanding the mathematics behind democracy gives us the tools to review existing elections and build mechanisms that will better meet the needs of the people they are supposed to serve," said Prof. Volić.
The selection of his lecture as TED Editor's Pick represents an exceptional personal and professional success, but also a confirmation of the importance of the topics to which he has devoted himself for years through scientific, educational and public work. His research shows that mathematics is not just an abstract science but a powerful tool for understanding and improving modern society.
We are proud of this great achievement of our member and former president and prof. We send sincere congratulations to Dr. Ismar Volić.
