Bosnian Academy in America: We want better cooperation with scientists and artists from Bosnia and Herzegovina. The 11th Annual Assembly of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS) ended this weekend in New York, where Dr. Nirvana Pistoljevic. She took over the one-year mandate from Dr. Dušice Babović-Vuksanović. This non-profit and non-political American organization gathers mostly highly established doctors from the most reputable American clinics, many of them professors at discerning American universities, but also other professionals—engineers, cyberneticians, as well as scientists from the humanities, writers, and artists. A member of BHAAAS is the globally known American writer of Bosnian roots, Sarajevo Aleksandar Hemon, who has lived in Chicago for over 25 years. Projects for BiH According to the data that could be heard at the BHAAAS assembly, this organization currently has 265 regular, correspondent, or honorary members. The Academy's medical section, which is headed by Dr. Mahira Tanović, a surgeon from New York, counts 99 doctors, of which as many as 65 are professorial affiliations at American universities; 21 doctors from Bosnia and Herzegovina and 3 more from other Balkan countries are members of BHAAAS. In the annual report of the Medical Section for 2016, which was presented at the assembly by Dr. Eldin Karaiković from Illinois, among other things, they talked about cooperation between American family medicine doctors and their colleagues in the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as the growing trend of the importance of family medicine as preventive health care, which remains one of the most important projects between the two countries. Pediatricians—members of the Academy—are also involved in the project. Dr. also spoke about this. Eldina Vajzović-Nizamić, a regional medical expert, is permanently employed at the American Embassy in Sarajevo. Stalled cooperation It is interesting that at the BHAAAS Assembly, it was officially mentioned that the cooperation, which is in the form of a formal letter addressed to the director of the UKC (University Clinical Center) in Sarajevo, to Dr. Sebija Izetbegović (April 5, 2016), to this day remained unanswered. Although there were no special comments or official reactions to this, the case of the dismissal of Dr. Ismet Gavrankapetanović. Many American doctors of Bosnia and Herzegovina origin are appalled by the manner of shifts and the violation of human and professional rights at UKSC. The private sector leads the way. But that's why excellent cooperation with the private Faculty of Medicine SSSTA (Sarajevo School of Science and Technology) in Sarajevo, as well as regional cooperation with similar institutions in Zenica, Tuzla, and Osijek in the Republic of Croatia, was highlighted. As it was said, cooperation with ANUBiH (the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina) was also achieved. Every year, with a series of lectures and interactive panels, the Academy organizes BHAAAS Days in Bosnia and Herzegovina, so the 10th meeting in June 2018 in Jahorina has already been announced here. Other sciences Efforts are being made, in addition to medical science, which is the numerical leader in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The American Academy hires experts from other fields, such as Dr. of mathematical sciences Ismar Volić from the famous "Wellesley College" in Boston, otherwise in charge of financial operations at BHAAAS. Dr. is also a member of the Academy. Amila Buturović, orientalist and historian from "York" University in Toronto, is the author of important books in the field. Culture and history At the assembly in New York, a special project of the Bosnian stećak was presented, which, if realized, should be placed in one of the locations in the US capital, Washington. The Academy has yet to make a decision on this, which was requested by one of the founders of BHAAAS, Dr. Mirsad Hadžikadić, director of the Institute for Complex Systems and professor at the University of North Carolina. Given that the Bosnian stećak is a symbol of what BHAAAS cultivates in America—the multi-ethnicity characteristic of Bosnia and Herzegovina—it would certainly be the crown of the Academy's cultural activity, well-informed people agree. At the assembly in New York, a special topic on the Trilogy of Bosnia's State during the Middle Ages was announced, which was to be presented by the new president, Nirvana Pištoljević. Sarajevo Philharmonic For many years, BHAAAS has been participating in the cultural exchange between BiH and the USA, contributing to the engagement of American classical musicians for the Sarajevo Philharmonic, which according to announcements will continue as a very successful form of cooperation. Award-winning musician Svjetlana Bukvić, professor of music in New York, was elected to head the Art Section of the Academy at this assembly. Author: Erol Avdović
