16th BHAAAS Days: Exploring Mathematics through a Workshop and Film Screening

 

We are pleased to invite high school mathematics teachers to take part in a unique workshop titled “Mathematics and Democracy”, which will be held on June 18, 2025, in Sarajevo, as part of the 16th BHAAAS Days.

The workshop explores the connection between teaching mathematics and its real-world role in democratic processes. Participants will have the opportunity to examine the importance of mathematical knowledge in understanding and improving democratic societies through topics such as the mathematics of voting systemsparliamentary seat allocation, and quantification of power.

The workshop will be led by Dženeta Ajanić, mathematics teacher at the Second Gymnasium Sarajevo, and Ismar Volić, professor of mathematics at Wellesley College (USA) and director of the Institute for Mathematics and Democracy.

Registration is open until May 20, and the number of participants is limited.

Participation is free of charge, lunch is provided, while participants are responsible for their own travel expenses.

On the same day at 6:00 PM, all workshop participants and the interested public are invited to a free screening of the documentary film “Counted Out” at Cineplexx Sarajevo, with subtitles provided.

The film “Counted Out” addresses a crucial issue – how understanding mathematics directly affects civil rightselections,healthcareclimate change, and the fight against disinformation.

One of the main contributors to the film is Professor Ismar Volić, a BHAAAS member, who demonstrates through his book “Making Democracy Count” and the work of the Institute how mathematics can enhance electoral processesrepresentation, and fairness in democratic systems.
