16th Days of BHAAAS – The Largest Gathering of Scientists and Artists from BiH and the Diaspora

Last night in Sarajevo, the 16th edition of the Days of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS) was officially opened — the largest scientific gathering that brings together experts from both the diaspora and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

This prestigious international event, taking place from June 19 to 22, has for years contributed to the promotion of science, arts, and social development in Bosnia and Herzegovina, while also strengthening ties between academic communities at home and abroad.

This year’s conference gathered over 400 participants and 165 speakers from various countries. Throughout the four-day event, more than 25 thematic symposia are being held, providing a platform for sharing the latest research, exchanging knowledge, and initiating new collaborations. In doing so, BHAAAS continues to affirm its role as a bridge between science, innovation, and art.

BHAAAS President, Prof. Dr. Adnan Begović, emphasized to the media that the Days of BHAAAS are a unique multidisciplinary event that connects science, innovation, art, and social engagement.

“Our goal from the beginning was to connect experts from the diaspora and the homeland, enhance academic exchange, and inspire concrete societal change. I am proud that we have managed to bring together people from different disciplines and generations, whose knowledge and experience contribute to the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Experts working in both BiH and abroad benefit not only their host countries but also their homeland, creating new value. That is a benefit for the country — and for us, it is also a form of emotional connection with our roots. The enthusiasm and energy that have endured for so many years are proof of that,” said Prof. Dr. Begović.

At the opening ceremony, Dario Šegrt from the Ministry of Human Rights and Refugees of BiH highlighted the significant contribution of the BiH diaspora, especially BHAAAS, in sharing knowledge.

“You are not only returning knowledge to your country — you are building bridges between the homeland and the world. The Ministry remains your trusted partner, and we look forward to all future joint projects,” Šegrt stated.

Emir Ibrahimagić, Director of the Office for Diaspora of Sarajevo Canton, and Damir Smajlović, Board Member of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Medical Association in Germany, also emphasized the importance of such events for recognizing the potential of the BiH diaspora.

Dr. Eldin Karaiković, one of BHAAAS’s founders, expressed his satisfaction that the organization has become a bridge connecting BiH scientists across the globe, now gathering more than 320 members.

A special recognition — Honorary BHAAAS Member for contributions to promoting Bosnian and Herzegovinian art globally — was awarded to Jasmila Žbanić, whose work continues to leave a deep mark on the world of cinema.

The formal program concluded with a rich artistic segment, including performances by students and BHAAAS members, as well as a musical performance by Emir Bukovica.

Once again, the Days of BHAAAS confirm their role as a key platform for connecting the diaspora with Bosnia and Herzegovina’s scientific, cultural, and professional communities. Since its founding in 2009, the event has been a meeting place for science, innovation, and art — and a foundation for future collaboration and social progress in BiH.
