Since 2023, the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS) has been organizing the Mentorship Program for medical students in Bosnia and Herzegovina. Through this nine-month program, students have the opportunity to work with BHAAAS members and medical experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Europe and the United States of America.
The aim of the program is to connect talented medical students in Bosnia and Herzegovina with successful professionals from around the world, and to support the development of their academic, professional and communication skills through individual mentorship.
How does the program work?
The Mentorship Program lasts nine months, from October to June. After being matched with a mentor, students are responsible for arranging and maintaining regular mentorship meetings.
To successfully complete the program, students are required to complete at least nine hours of mentorship, for example, one hour per month. BHAAAS will provide mentors and students with guidelines and recommendations for quality mentorship, while the program team will monitor participants’ progress throughout the program.
Through this program, students have the opportunity to enrich their knowledge, develop professional and academic skills, gain insight into different medical career paths and connect with experts whose experience can serve as valuable support in their further development.

Who can apply?
The program is open to medical students from Bosnia and Herzegovina who, at the time the program begins in October, are in their third, fourth, fifth or sixth year of study, as well as students who are completing their internship at that time.
Students who have previously participated in the BHAAAS Mentorship Program are not eligible to apply again.
When are applications open?
Applications for mentees, that is, students who wish to participate in the program, are open from July 1 to August 30.
How to apply?
Interested students can apply by completing the online application form.
After the application period closes, the program committee will review all submitted applications and assess which applications meet the requirements for participation in the program. Qualified applications will then enter the mentor-matching process, with the aim of finding a mentor who best matches the student’s interests, needs and professional goals.
Students whose applications are approved and for whom a suitable mentor is found will be notified during the last two weeks of September, along with additional information about the start of the program.
Call for Mentors
BHAAAS invites members of the Medical Section who wish to share their knowledge, experience and professional insights with young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina to join the Mentorship Program as mentors.
The role of a mentor involves dedicating approximately one to two hours per month to working with a student over a period of nine months. The program begins every year in October, but applications for mentors are open throughout the year.
