Dr. Denita Hadžiabdić Guerry, a member of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), participated in two important programs during her visit to Sarajevo, both dedicated to knowledge exchange, supporting young researchers, and connecting them with the academic community in the United States.
At the Faculty of Agriculture and Food Sciences of the University of Sarajevo, she participated in the “Coffee with the Scientists” program, organized by the Faculty on September 22. Alongside Dr. Hadžiabdić Guerry, the program also featured Dr. DeWayne Shoemaker of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
Dr. Shoemaker delivered a lecture titled “Genetic Journeys: Using Population Genetics to Trace Invasions, Origins, and Reproductive Strategies,” focusing on the application of population genetics in studying the origins, spread, and reproductive strategies of different species.
Dr. Hadžiabdić Guerry spoke on the topic “Finding Your Fit: Applying to U.S. Graduate Programs,” providing students with practical advice on selecting an appropriate graduate program in the United States, navigating the application process, and planning their future academic development.
The program concluded with an informal “Coffee with the Scientists” discussion, during which students had an opportunity to speak directly with the guests, learn more about their professional journeys, and receive answers to their questions about scientific research and studying abroad.
Fulbright as a Path to International Development
On the same day, Dr. Hadžiabdić Guerry delivered another lecture, titled “Fulbright Without Borders: Global Opportunities for Researchers, Students, and Future Leaders.” The event was organized by BHAAAS in cooperation with the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Bosnia and Herzegovina (ANUBiH).
Held in the ANUBiH amphitheater, the lecture introduced graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and scientists from Bosnia and Herzegovina to the opportunities and application procedures available through Fulbright programs.
Participants received practical information about the various types of scholarships, eligibility requirements, application strategies, and the preparation of a strong and competitive application. Opportunities for U.S. scholars interested in participating in Fulbright programs in Bosnia and Herzegovina were also presented.
As a former Fulbright U.S. Scholar in Ghana, a former Fulbright Alumni Ambassador, and the current Fulbright Faculty Advisor and Fulbright Coordinator at the University of Tennessee, Dr. Hadžiabdić Guerry also shared her personal experience of building an academic and professional career that took her from Sarajevo to the United States.
BHAAAS Members as a Link Between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the World
These events reaffirm the importance of direct exchanges of knowledge and experience between established scientists and young people who are only beginning to build their academic careers. Practical information, personal experiences, and open dialogue can help young researchers recognize the opportunities available to them and take their next steps in education and professional development with greater confidence.
Dr. Denita Hadžiabdić Guerry’s engagement also demonstrates the important role BHAAAS members play in connecting the academic communities of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States. By sharing their knowledge, experience, and international networks with new generations, Academy members contribute to the development of Bosnia and Herzegovina’s scientific community, strengthen mentorship, and create new opportunities for educational and research cooperation.
Dr. Denita Hadžiabdić Guerry is a professor in the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. Her research focuses on the population genetics of fungal plant pathogens, population biology, forest health and pathology, and the diversity and conservation of native plants.
As a BHAAAS member, she continues to build bridges between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the United States through her scientific, mentoring, and international engagement, while bringing young people closer to opportunities that may shape their future academic and professional paths.
