As the news reports, the attack on Prof. Kukića was politically motivated. While we await the police report, which will hopefully quickly and successfully reveal the identity of the attackers and bring about adequate judicial action, BHAAAS expresses its concern about this and all similar attacks on academic, cultural, and artistic workers motivated by political differences. The academic community must be and remain a stronghold of open, scientifically informed, analytical, and critical discourse based on freedom of expression. It must not be in the service of ideology and politics. For academic workers to be able to study their subject, teach students, and publish their views, they must not be subjected to threats, physical attacks, blackmail, or any other expression of violence. Denial can only be supported based on conscientious intellectual debate and respect for the inviolability of critical thought. We, members of BHAAAS and at the same time members of high academic institutions throughout the USA, Canada, and other countries, appeal to all colleagues and fellow citizens in Bosnia and Herzegovina to unanimously condemn this act and urge that the perpetrators be found and adequately punished, and that disrespect for the freedom of academic expression be promptly condemned and eradicated as soon as possible. Board of Directors of the Bosnian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS)
