The Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences has awarded honorary membership in BHAAAS to esteemed Prof. Dr. Richard C. Allen, M.D., Ph.D., FACS, a distinguished expert in ophthalmology and oculoplastic surgery from Baylor College of Medicine in the United States of America.
This high recognition was awarded to Prof. Dr. Allen for his outstanding and selfless contribution to the development of ophthalmology, particularly oculoplastic surgery, within the BHAAAS Days, as well as for his continuous support in strengthening professional cooperation and advancing this field in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Over the years, through his participation, lectures and professional support, Prof. Dr. Allen has made a significant contribution to connecting ophthalmologists from Bosnia and Herzegovina with contemporary global knowledge and practices. His engagement is an example of genuine academic and professional cooperation, through which knowledge, experience and the highest standards of medical practice are passed on to new generations of physicians and specialists in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The recognition was presented to him by Dr. Nina Jovanović, one of the leaders of the BHAAAS Medical Section, a specialist in ophthalmology and oculofacial plastic and reconstructive surgery. On this occasion, it was emphasized that Prof. Dr. Allen’s contribution is of special importance not only for the development of the ophthalmology program within the BHAAAS Days, but also for the long-term strengthening of professional ties between Bosnia and Herzegovina and the international medical community.

Prof. Dr. Richard C. Allen is the Carolyn F. Elles Professor of Ophthalmology at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. As an oculoplastic surgeon, he focuses on diseases and surgical procedures of the eyelids, lacrimal system and orbit, and his work includes both pediatric and adult patients. He is professionally affiliated with renowned healthcare institutions, including the Alkek Eye Center, Texas Children’s Hospital, Ben Taub Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
He began his education at Duke University, after which he earned his Doctor of Medicine and Doctor of Philosophy degrees at Baylor College of Medicine. He completed his residency in ophthalmology at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he also continued his advanced professional training. His rich academic and clinical career includes work in the field of oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery, as well as a significant contribution to education and mentorship in this subspecialty.
By awarding honorary membership to Prof. Dr. Allen, BHAAAS has once again emphasized the importance of international cooperation, knowledge exchange and the involvement of distinguished global experts in the development of science, medicine and education in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
