Second Congress of BH Doctors in Berlin: Connecting the Medical Diaspora and the Homeland through Collaboration, Science, and Humanity

On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the Second Congress of Bosnian-Herzegovinian Doctors in Germany was successfully held in Berlin. The event brought together numerous medical professionals of Bosnian origin who now work across the globe from Germany, the USA, and Croatia, all the way to their homeland.

The Congress was organized by the Bosnian-Herzegovinian Medical Chamber in Germany (BHAG) and hosted at the Embassy of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Berlin, with strong support from the Ambassador of BiH to Germany, His Excellency Damir Arnaut. A key partner in the program was the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS).

Distinguished BHAAAS members took part in the Congress, including Prof. Ognjen Gajić MD and Prof. Adnan Begović MD from the USA, Mirza Pojskić MD from Germany, and  Nina Jovanović MD and Igor Knezović MD from Zagreb. The presence of Prof. Hajrija Maksić MD, acting director of the Clinical Center of Sarajevo University (UKCS), and Prof.  Ismet Gavrankapetanović MD, director of the General Hospital "Abdulah Nakaš," was also a great honor.

“This Congress was an opportunity not only to build new professional connections but also to take concrete steps in strengthening ties between the medical diaspora and healthcare institutions in BiH. We focused on developing specific forms of collaboration, especially in areas such as urogynecology, neurosurgery, and advanced spinal procedures. We also discussed projects aimed at improving medical services, modernizing surgical units, and training young doctors in BiH,” emphasized Dr. Adnan Begović, president of BHAAAS, noting that successful examples of such collaboration already exist. Students from BiH have already completed training at the Marburg clinic, and expansion of exchange programs is planned with other universities, including the Sarajevo Medical Faculty.

The unified message of the participants was clear: the experience of the medical diaspora, combined with the talent and potential in the homeland, represents a reliable path toward building a modern, skilled, and efficient healthcare system.

The Berlin Congress once again demonstrated that science, humanity, and love for one’s homeland can and must go hand in hand. BHAG and BHAAAS will continue their cooperation based on shared goals and vision. Events like this are crucial for strengthening trust, launching new initiatives, and deepening the integration of diaspora and homeland potential.
