The BHAAAS Ophthalmology Section announces: Sarajevo to host leading experts in ophthalmology, with a focus on the anterior segment, refractive surgery, corneal transplantation, and the ocula

Sarajevo will host the 5th International Ophthalmology Symposium titled “Cornea, Ocular Surface and Refractive Surgery” on June 21–22, 2025. The symposium is organized in collaboration with the Turkish Ophthalmological Association (TOA) and offers a rich educational program featuring six speakers from TOA’s Cornea and Ocular Surface Section.

The symposium is part of the 16th Annual Days of the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS), which will take place from June 19 to 22 at Hotel Holiday. As part of this renowned event, numerous scientific and medical sessions are expected, with the ophthalmology symposium standing out as one of the key platforms for exchanging knowledge on the latest therapeutic approaches in ophthalmology, emphasizes Melita Adilović Čabrić, MD PhD candidate, specialist in ophthalmology and optometry.

“We are especially pleased with the international scope of this event and the participation of colleagues from the Turkish Ophthalmological Association, which further strengthens our professional ties and exchange of experiences. We expect engaging discussions, practical case examples, and new perspectives that will benefit everyday clinical practice,”
says Nina Jovanović, MD, FEBO, MSc, MPH, specialist in ophthalmology and optometry.

The symposium will include four expert panels with presentations and discussions on state-of-the-art treatment approaches in the field of anterior segment diseases, with a focus on the ocular surface, dry eye and ocular surface tumors, corneal diseases, corneal transplantation, and refractive surgery (laser vision correction and lens exchange procedures).

As part of the symposium, an educational session will be held for young ophthalmologists and residents, along with an interactive workshop focused on corneal topography and tomography with hands-on training using the latest technology.

The ophthalmology program within BHAAAS Days offers a platform for sharing knowledge, clinical experience, and technology among experts from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Turkey, Ireland, Switzerland, Norway, Croatia, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and the wider international community. Presentations by more than 27 invited leading experts in the field of the anterior segment and over 20 young ophthalmologists are planned.

Beyond professional development, the symposium also aims to strengthen professional connections, academic initiatives, and collaborative research projects.

The Days of BHAAAS represent much more than a series of symposia – they are a bridge between the diaspora and domestic experts, a space where new partnerships and ideas are born to improve the healthcare system and science in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
