The Second Conference of Biology Students was successfully held at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Tuzla on May 21 and 22, 2026, as part of the “17th Days of BHAAAS.” The conference was organized by the Department of Biology of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, University of Tuzla, and the Bosnian-Herzegovinian American Academy of Arts and Sciences (BHAAAS).
The conference brought together students, professors, researchers, and guests from Bosnia and Herzegovina and abroad, highlighting the importance of academic cooperation, knowledge exchange, and support for young researchers. The attendees were addressed by the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics, Prof. Dr. Isat Skenderović, who emphasized the importance of developing student research and providing continuous support to young talents.
The conference was chaired by Prof. Dr. Elvira Hadžiahmetović Jurida, while teaching assistant Ena Nezirović played an important role in organizing and moderating the program. Through a carefully designed program, participants had the opportunity to present their work, take part in scientific discussions, and exchange experiences with colleagues and experts from various fields of biology and related sciences.
A special contribution to the program was made by guest lecturers Prof. Dr. Almir Karabegović from the University of Sarajevo, who delivered the lecture “Data Science in Biology: How Data Are Changing Life Sciences,” and Dr. sc. Sebastian Müller from the Institut Curie in Paris, who presented the lecture “Iron Drives Cancer Cell Plasticity and Metastatic Formation.” The program was further enriched by Bosnian-Herzegovinian children’s and young adult author Šimo Ešić, whose inspiring address focused on the importance of education, culture, books, and young people.
The central part of the conference consisted of student presentations in the fields of genetics, ecology, biology, bioinformatics, and contemporary scientific research. Guests from the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics of the University of Banja Luka also made a significant contribution by presenting research in the fields of anthropometry, ecology, and the biology of freshwater organisms, further strengthening inter-university cooperation and the exchange of scientific experience.
The expert jury included Prof. Dr. Elvira Hadžiahmetović Jurida, Sanja Hajdukov, Sanel Hodžić, and Lejla Mujakić. Following the student presentations, the best papers were announced: first place went to Amila Ahmetović, second place to Haris Trakić, and third place to Šaha Brašnjić.
The conference program was also complemented by artistic content, including cooperation with the Academy of Dramatic Arts of the University of Tuzla and a performance by Tarik Arifhodžić, a fourth-year student of the “Čestmir Mirko Dušek” Secondary Music School in Tuzla.
The Second Conference of Biology Students once again demonstrated that the University of Tuzla is an important center of scientific development, academic cooperation, and support for young researchers. Events like this create space for new knowledge, ideas, networking, and future scientific achievements.
